FRISCO, TX With a 3-2 victory in regulation, FC Dallas got a taste against Tigres UANL Tuesday night. But it was the Mexican club who walked away with the hardware. After the one-point win, Dallas and Tigres were tied in aggregate 4-4 for the 2008 Rio Grande Plate. Tigres then took FCD 3-1 in the deciding penalty kick series to claim the Plate with an aggregate score of 5-4. Tigres won the first game 2-1 in Monterrey, Mexico on Feb. 20 and now owns its second plate in three editions of the series.
Aaron Pitchkolan made a strong case to regain his starting spot in MLS play with two crucial goals, including the first one in the fifth minute and the equalizer with one minute remaining in regulation. In between, Jamie Watson scored a goal in the 34th minute, from one of two goal-assisting corner kicks by Chase Wileman.
Pitchkolan put FCD in the lead from six yards out, five minutes into the game by heading home a Wileman corner. Wileman was against the catalyst in the 34th minute with another corner. Watson was unmarked in the box and knew what to do, heading the ball in to give Dallas a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Tigres made meaningful substitutions at the half and the Guillermo Marino pulled Tigres within one in the 60th minute, scoring off a corner kick. The score was even at the 72nd minute when Manuel Viniegra made a skillful run and perfect assist to Javier Saavedra on the left flank. Saavedra dribbled in and Dallas goalie Ray Burse bit on the bait. Saavedra then finished from 12 yards out.
Dallas once again had a chance at bringing home some hardware, but was letting it slip through their grasp. Pitchkolan game them hope by connecting on a combination from Dello-Russo to Spencer Wadsworth to Pitch, at the far post. It gave Dallas the lead once again, with a minute remaining. That gave Dallas the regulation game, but forced a decision by penalties to determine the Plate winner.
Andre Rocha got the PK series off to a perfect start for Dallas, but Bobby Rhine, Eric Avila and Wileman drew blanks, while Tigres converted three time. As a result, Tigres took home the hardware after the end of some very entertaining soccer at Pizza Hut Park.
