It is enough to be handling your first full year of coaching in the MLS—for most people, anyway. But FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman cannot walk away from his teaching roots. He sees his current venue as an enhanced platform to connect with the ordinary, but passionate soccer coaches looking for a special “something” that they can impart to their players in pursuit of the “beautiful game.”

As he did the last 5-6 years he coached at SMU, Hyndman will offer a two-day clinic for soccer coaches that will qualify for two units of U.S. Soccer Continuing Education Units (CEU’s), as well as allow the coaches to rub shoulders with and learn from some of the best soccer minds and coaches nationally and internationally. The clinic runs May 15-16 at Pizza Hut Park.

“The purpose of this is educating coaches,” Hyndman said. “I have had the privilege of meeting many of them the last few years and clinicians as well. There are so many good coaches in Texas—like the ones in McAllen, 5-6 of them getting in a single car and driving nine hours to this seminar. I have been touched by their response as well as others. All of them recognize they have a responsibility to their sport.”

A large number of coaches coming to the clinic are high school coaches, a level of coaching that Hyndman and his clinicians really want to touch.

“They are important to our kids,” Hyndman said. “They are in touch with them eight hours a day and practice every day with them.”

One of the clinicians in the clinic, Notre Dame Women’s coach Randy Waldrum was a successful and long time coach at Irving Nimitz High School. He was also Schellas’ Hyndman’s first assistant at SMU. Waldrum has gone on to a very successful college coaching career at Baylor University and now Notre Dame, where he has been to six of the last 10 women’s final fours. His Notre Dame team won the NCAA championship in 2004 and Waldrum has the fourth highest winning percentage of active NCAA coaches. He is also currently the president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The theme of this clinic is evaluating matches and the coaches will have a great opportunity for that, looking at Euro Championship matches, NCAA matches and concluding the clinic by evaluating the FC Dallas vs. Seattle Sounders game at Pizza Hut Park May 16.

Perhaps the primary clinician of the event is Roy Millar. Millar has been Director of Coaching at the Irish Football Association from 1975 to the present. He is a FIFA and UEFA Coach Educator and was the Irish U17 and U19 coach from 1982-2000 and U21 coach from 2000 to 2008. He has often been a clinician for NSCAA Conventions.

Hyndman, currently the FC Dallas head coach will of course be a clinician for this. He has his own track record as a super successful NCAA coach with 30 NCAA appearances as well as a Final Four coach at Eastern Illinois and SMU (twice). He is a past president of the NSCAA and former NSCAA Director of Coaching Emeritus as well as a US Soccer staff coach.

Assistant coach of FCD, John Ellinger, brings a strong resume to this clinic as a former MLS head coach at Real Salt Lake (2005-07), former head coach for the US U17 men’s national team and former Director of Youth Development USSF and US Youth Soccer Technical Director. He is also a US Soccer Federation Staff Instructor.

FC Dallas assistant and goal keeper coach Drew Keeshan is also part of the clinician staff. Keeshan is former goalkeeper coach at Clemson University and a former professional player.

The $130 fee covers all of the sessions, a training demonstration at the Michael Johnson Performance Center, a tee shirt, a training booklet including all of the featured sessions and a social event Friday at Lochrann’s Irish Pub.

This is the pre-event registration price. Registration Friday morning (7:45 am.-8:30 a.m. at Pizza Hut Park) at the start of the event will cost $150. If you want the CEU units, please bring an additional check for $25, made out to Schellas Hyndman, plus your NSCAA coaching license. If you have more questions, please email or call at: shyndman@fcdallas.net or (214) 705-6782.
