AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani said Thursday that his Italian club will seek damages from U.S. Soccer after central defender Oguchi Onyewu tore the patella tendon in his left knee in the 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Costa Rica in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night.
"I'm very angry because once again the national teams take our players and we have to pay the consequences of injuries," Galliani was quoted by Italian media, according to Skysports.com.
"We demand compensation from the American federation because we cannot pay the salary of a player who cannot play for six months."
Onyewu, who hasn't played for Milan's first team, will be sidelined at least three-four months.
"It is a big blow for me," Gooch told skysports.com. "I am devastated.
"After a jump, I did not feel my knee. I knew straight away that I was badly injured.
"But that is life. Hopefully, I will come back soon."
