FRISCO, TX – Going into Saturday morning’s preseason scrimmage against Memphis, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said it would be all about getting their first look at trialists and rookies in a game setting. The coaching staff got what it expected as FCD prevailed 3-1 over Memphis University. None of the Dallas starters saw action.
FCD got goals from Bruno Guarda and trialist Yo Dubao in the first half and another from striker Peri Marosevic in the second frame. Memphis' lone goal came from forward Justin Watson about two minutes before the break.
"I think we put a lot of our trialists out there. We wanted to give them a chance to get a fair shake and look at them a little bit more," Hyndman said. "I thought they did all right but I was looking for a little bit more from some of them. I didn't think we really did much in the first half as far as any possession play, any build up in the attack or any support in the attack. Second half, I thought we did a little bit better in that area. We'll get a little bit more time to look at the players and then we'll have to make some decisions."
Guarda's goal came in the 20th minute off a free kick. The FCD midfielder stepped up to take it from just outside the arc and drilled it into the back of the Memphis net to give his club an early edge.
"When we had the free kick, I saw a good chance to take it. I talked to Steve Purdy and he said to take it if I feel comfortable doing it," Guarda said. "I stepped up, took it and am glad it went in."
For the opening 45 minutes, the former SMU midfielder found himself in familiar company with former SMU teammates Duke Hashimoto playing to his left and Dane Saintus on the right.
"Duke (Hashimoto) on the left and Dane (Saintus) on the right are two great players that can go one-v-one. I feel comfortable playing with them," Guarda said.
FCD wasted little time in adding to their lead when Dubao scored in the 23rd minute to make it 2-0. The former junior player for Portuguese club Benfica capitalized when Memphis goalkeeper Jordan Leedle mishandled the ball and put it into the back of the net.
The international trialist seemed to show a lot of what Hyndman was looking for.
"It was just hard work. He's quick, can read the game and is very technical," Hyndman said of Dubao. "He could be one of the most technical players on our team. He can use his right foot and left foot. He has good vision. I think he showed some quality. I thought Yu settled it down a little bit in the first half and was doing some good things."
Memphis drew one back in the 43rd minute when Watson put one past FCD goalkeeper Josh Lambo to make it 2-1. However, that was as close as the college team got. In the 74th, Marosevic converted a free kick from the same distance as Guarda's and FCD prevailed 3-1.
"It was really a game where I didn't think anybody got hold of it to settle it down. I thought in the second half, Peri (Marosevic) and (Misho) Fahim did a pretty good job up front," Hyndman said. "The two of them became more of a threat and we had some scoring chances. Even though he's very young, we like Brian Levya. He was very active. It really wasn't a game where anyone stood out."
He was pleased to see his team convert a pair of set pieces into goals.
"I thought Bruno (Guarda) hit that one well, a deflection off a guy and then, Peri (Marosevic) buried that one. I thought that it was probably a fair result. We didn't give them a lot of scoring chances."
In the second half, the play of Leyva in the midfield and Fahim up top were major bright spots. Two players who went the full 90 were in the back, Anthony Wallace, who played at left back and trialist Steve Purdy, who was solid in the middle.
"He (Wallace) did fine. I thought he was fine," Hyndman said. "That's what we're looking for from him, that type of performance."
FCD returns to the practice field on Monday and will next face the University of Tulsa next Saturday morning at Pizza Hut Park.
