FRISCO, TX--Most FCD fans are waiting eagerly on the promised-since-December striker signing for the team. But the prize in-hand is a new acquisition on the opposite side of the pitch—Kevin Hartman, longtime L.A. Galaxy net-minder, but more recently of the Kansas City Wizards.
The Dallas front office finally confirmed the signing after blog posts all over cyberspace rumored the deal during the day. FCD acquired Hartman in a trade with the Kansas City Wizards, sending them a second round selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for the four-time MLS All-Star.
The signing will be great competition for starting FCD ‘keeper Dario Sala. None of the young keepers have really been able to post a threat to the Argentine veteran. Last year's second-in-line Ray Burse has been waived. Josh Lambo would be next in line and rookie Sean Kelley has apparently wound up on the positive side of the cut line. This signing makes room for Lambo to be loaned to a USL team to sharpen his skills.
Hyndman continually reminds when queried about any potential signing that the team always goes over carefully what may be available within the MLS. Hartman is a 12-year MLS veteran, posting a Games-Against-Average of 1.24. Hartman has accounted for 146 victories and 120 wins and 64 draws. He holds the MLS record for shutouts, with 84. His post-season record is 22-15-7. But this season, Hartman was headed out from the Wizards without contract, though still the property of Kansas City. KC recently signed ‘keeper Jimmy Nelson as his replacement.
“I’m excited to be in Dallas,” said Hartman. “It’s the place where I won the 2005 championship with the Galaxy and it’s always held a place in my heart. I’m excited to be here to play in front of the Dallas fans and excited to start a new chapter in my soccer career.”
One theory thrown out on the blogosphere is that Sala, who was named captain the latter part of the season in 2009, is unhappy that he has not been renewed as captain this season. While there has been no official announcement, FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman has advanced four candidates for the captain’s stripes; Sala, Ugo Ihemelu, Daniel Hernandez and Heath Pearce, with Hernandez tabbed as the unofficial favorite. However, Sala is no mal-content and instead, is one of the most rabid team boosters among the players.
Sala picked up his game after being named captain after 2009 captain Pablo Richetti more or less took himself off the team. He seemed to relish the extra responsibility of leadership of the team. But the longtime player also understands the pressure of competition. After 67 games for Dallas, Sala has a 37-30 record and 1.37 GAA and 22 shutouts.
Hartman details, below, from the FCD media department:
The UCLA graduate was drafted in the third round of the 1997 College Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy where he remained for 10 seasons. While with the Galaxy, Hartman helped lead the team to the 2002 and 2005 MLS Cup titles, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles in 2001 and 2005 and the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2000. In 1999, he was named the MLS Pepsi Goalkeeper of the Year and was voted to the MLS AT&T Best XI team.
A four-time MLS All-Star (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005), Hartman holds all the major goalkeeping records in MLS history. He owns the record in games played in goal with 333, games started in goal with 328, minutes played in goal with 29,835, wins in goal with 146, saves in goal with 1,235 and shutouts with 84.
Hartman appeared in 243 games in goal for the Galaxy before being traded to Kansas City in 2007. In three seasons with the Wizards, Hartman played every minute of the regular season.
In 2000, Hartman made his first appearance with the U.S. National team in a match versus Jamaica which ended in a 2-2 tie. He made his first career start with the national team on Jan. 29, 2006, when the U.S. shut out Norway 5-0. He has earned a career total of five caps with the national team.
Author of a children’s book, Hartman is highly involved in the community, most recently working with literacy efforts in Kansas City.
