Jobson reaches record total as Baylor coach

HOUSTON– Baylor soccer head coach Marci Jobson became the winningest coach in program history with her team’s 5-0 victory versus Houston Baptist on Sunday at Sorrels Field.

“We have all worked hard to make this a program everyone can be proud of,” Jobson said. “That work and the heart that everyone has put into this program is why I am so proud to be the head coach at Baylor University.”

With the win, Jobson now holds a 47-28-14 record during her time at Baylor to better the 46 victories current Notre Dame coach Randy Waldrum totaled from 1996-98.

The match was called with 20 minutes remaining in the contest, because of poor field conditions. Playing in a rain storm for much of the first half, Baylor (8-1-1) used two goals by senior Dana Larsen in the first six minutes to build a lead it would never relinquish to Houston Baptist (3-5-2).

“We came out strictly to do business and to start the game sharp,” Jobson said. “The girls came out on fire and we knew with the rain we couldn’t let Houston Baptist hang around too long.”

To open the scoring, Larsen took a centering pass from Bri Campos and pushed it past HBU goalkeeper Shelby Horn in the fifth minute. Less than 30 seconds later, the senior was scoring again as her shot bounced off the crossbar and into the net. Lisa Sliwinski was credited with her third assist of the year, after setting up the opportunity.

Larsen now has five goals on the season and 24 for her career. The Mequon, Wis. product passed Ginny Rosario-Tull and Tiffany Boshers to take over fourth place on the BU career goal-scoring chart. Larsen recorded the third multi-goal game of her career and the first for a Baylor player this season.

Michelle Hagen scored her third goal of the year in the 35th minute to put Baylor up 3-0 going into halftime. Vic Hoffman collected her second assist of the season on the play.

In the second half, Sliwinski notched a goal of her own in the 62nd minute as she outraced an HBU defender to the ball and then got around Horn to tally her third goal of the year. In the 65th minute, Justine Hovden added another score to push the BU lead to 5-0. The sophomore’s second goal of the year came off of a shot inside the box.

“We finished some great goals and were able to handle the adversity of the horrible weather conditions,” Jobson said.

Baylor outshot the Huskies 15-5, including a 12-3 advantage in the first half.

Michelle Kloss got the start in goal for Baylor and played the majority of the contest to earn the win, while recording two saves. Meredith Stark played the final 8:24 of the match and made one save. Houston Baptist goalkeeper Shelby Horn made one save.

The Bears 8-1-1 start marks the best open to a season under Jobson and the second best start in program history. The 1996 squad started the year 12-1-1. Baylor is now 3-0 all-time versus HBU and has outscored the Huskies in those three contests, 17-0.

The Bears open Big 12 play on Friday against the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Okla.
