“DOS” SANTOS
Gio scores twice as Mexico beats Gabon, 2-0
COVENTRY, England—Giovani dos Santos scored in the 62nd minute and stoppage time to lift Mexico to their first win of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games, 2-0 over Gabon Sunday at City of Coventry Stadium.
After an energetic but scoreless first half, the chances started to come for El Tri. Oribe Peralta challenged Gabon goalkeeper Didier Ovono in the 50th minute. Peralta also played a role in the game-winner by Dos Santos, holding the ball and drawing the African defense to the edge of the penalty area before centering a pass to Dos Santos for the finish.
Gabon pressed for the equalizer, but managed only one serious challenge to goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona, who made the save in the 69th minute. In the first minute of stoppage time, Peralta was fouled in the penalty area, sending Dos Santos to the penalty spot for the insurance goal.
Mexico leads Group B with a win and a draw for four points and a +2 goal differential. They close out Group play against third-place Switzerland on Wednesday, August 1.
