LIGA MX APERTURA
Match Day 4 roundup
Atlante 2, Jaguares 1
Esteban Paredes scored both goals as Atlante defeated struggling Jaguares 2-1 Friday at Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna.
Paredes opened the scoring in the 56th minute, and, nine minutes after after Luis Gabriel Rey equalized, scored his fourth goal of the season to rob Chiapas (0-0-4) of their first Apertura point.
The win was Atlante’s first of the season, and leaves them at 1-2-1 and five points.
Leon 3, Santos Laguna 0
Upstarts Leon stunned defending champions Santos Laguna 3-0 and moved – at least temporarily -- to the top of the Apertura table Friday at Estadio Nou Camp.
Ignacio Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 31st minute, with a header off a corner kick by Luis Montes. The 1-0 lead held until the 75th, when Sebastian Maz added the second Esmereldas goal. Carlos Pena closed things out with five minutes left on the clock.
Leon (3-0-1, 9 pts) lead the league with ten goals scored, but do not have a single goalscorer in the league’s top ten. The Guerrero, in their final weekend without Mexico Olympic hero Oribe Peralta, fall to 2-1-1 (7).
America 1, Atlas 1
Rubens Sambueza scored in the 74th minute to lift Club America into a 1-1 draw with Atlas Saturday at Estadio Azteca.
Sambueza’s goal countered a strike by Hugo Rodriguez, which capped a series of three consecutive Atlas corner kicks, in the closing seconds of the first half. Netminder Miguel Pinto also stepped up for the Zorros, stopping a point-blank shot by America’s Christian Benitez in the 28th minute.
The result leaves both teams at 1-3-0 and six points.
Pachuca 2, Tijuana 2
Pachica got an 88th-minute goal from Nery Castillo to salvage a 2-2 draw with Tijuana Saturday at Estadio Hidalgo.
Pablo Aguilar gave the Xolos a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute, after running onto a long service by Leandro Augusto. Felix Borja put the Tuzos back in the game at the hour mark, off a corner kick, only to see Fernando Arce restore Tijuana’s lead with a free kick dummied through by Javier Gandolfi five minutes later.
Castillo’s equalizer came six minutes after Tijuana’s Fidel Martinez received his second yellow card and was ejected.
Tijuana are fifth in the standings at 2-1-1 (7 pts), seven places above Pachuca (1-2-1, 5pts).
Tigres 2, Queretaro 2
Queretaro scored twice in an eight-minute span of the second half, and seemed poised to snatch their first win of the Apertura before Juninho lifted Tigres into a 2-2 draw Saturday at Estadio Universitario.
Lucas Lobos put Tigres up by a goal in the 47th minute, scoring on a corner kick. Carlos Bueno equalized for the Gallos Blancos in the 61st when his shot deflected off defender Hugo Ayala, and Emmanuel Tapia gave Queretaro a 2-1 advantage in the 69th.
Juninho salvaged the point for Tigres from distance in the 78th minute.
The draw left Tigres third on the table with eight points (2-2-0). Queretaro are 17th at 0-1-3, but do have their first point of the season.
San Luis 1, Monterrey 1
Winless San Luis played Monterrey to a 1-1 draw Saturday at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramirez.
Humberto Suazo opened the scoring for the Rayados in the ninth minute, off a set-up pass from Cesar Delgado, but Luis Rodriguez equalized for the Gladiadores two minutes after the intermission.
Monterrey held on for the draw despite losing Cesar Fabian to a red card with 25 minutes left to play.
The result leaves San Luis at 0-2-2 and two points, while Monterrey are at 1-2-1 (5).
Toluca 2, Pumas 1
Unbeaten Toluca knocked upstarts Leon out of first place in the Apertura standings with a 2-1 win over Pumas Sunday at Estadio Olimpico Universitario.
Juan Carlos Cacho gave the Diablos Rojas a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, and also had a goal called back for offside in the 36th. Luis Garcia equalized for Pumas in the 37th, but Carlos Gerardo Rodriguez put the game away with a penalty kick in the 59th, after Edgar Benitez was fouled in the box.
Toluca are a perfect 4-0-0 with 12 points. UNAM have four points from their four matches (1-1-2).
Cruz Azul 1, Puebla 0
Mariano Pavone scored the 82nd minute to give Cruz Azul a hard-fought 1-0 win over shorthanded Puebla Sunday at Estadio Cuauhtemoc.
Pavone scored off an assist from Javier Orozco.
La Franja played with ten men for 58 minutes after a red card to Jesus Chavez in the 32nd minute.
La Maquina remain undefeated at 2-2-0 and eight points. Puebla remain near the bottom of the table at 0-1-3 and one point.
Chivas 1, Morelia 1
Xavi Baez’s 80th minute goal gave shorthanded Chivas de Guadalajara a 1-1 draw with visiting Morelia Sunday at Estadio Omnilife.
The Herd went down by a goal when Mauricio Romero scored in the 34th minute, and by a man after a red card to Rafael Marquez Lugo in the 69th.
Monarcas are in ninth place at 1-3-0 and six points. The draw gave Chivas (0-2-2) only their second point of the season.
