COPA COMING
U.S. to host CONMEBOL event in 2016

BUENOS AIRES—The United States will host a special edition of the Copa America tournament in 2016, CONMEBOL announced on Wednesday.

The event will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of South American soccer’s governing body. A total of 16 teams will participate in the 'Copa America Centenario', ten from South America, the United States, Mexico and four more teams from CONCACAF. The four other CONCACAF teams will be added based on their rankings in the 2015 Gold Cup. The regularly scheduled Copa America will take place in 2015 in Chile.

"In July 2016, CONMEBOL will celebrate its first century. In order to commemorate it with the pomp it deserves, the association presidents and members of the executive committee have decided to hold a tournament with nations across the Americas," said a statement from the South American federation.
