LIGA MX APERTURA
Midweek roundup
Morelia 2, Atlas 0
Morelia moved into fourth place on the Apertura table with Tuesday’s 2-0 win over shorthanded Atlas at Estadio Morelos, but dropped to fifth on Thursday, after Club America picked up three points against Puebla.
Joao Rojas delivered the win with a goal in the 32nd minute, and Francisco Torres padded Monarcas’ lead in the 72nd. Jefferson Montero eluded a defender in the penalty area and dished off to Rojas for a tap-in finish. Torres snagged a loose ball in the box and turned it into the insurance goal.
The Zorros played the final 13 minutes with ten men after a red card to Juan Pablo Vigon. Atlas coach Tomas Boy also was ejected, in stoppage time.
Morelia improve to 5-7-2 and 22 points. The Zorros are 17th of the 18 teams in the tournament at 1-8-5 (11 pts).
Club America 1, Puebla 0
Jesus Molina scored the only goal Club America needed to defeat Puebla 1-0 Thursday at Estadio Cuauhtemoc.
Daniel Montenegro got the assist on Molina’s 35th-minute game-winner.
America controlled the tempo for most of the match, but had problems with Puebla’s Edinson Toloza, who forced goalkeeper Moises Munoz into an acrobatic save in the 32nd minute. Hermonio Miranda had a final chance to equalize for La Franja, but hit the post deep in stoppage time.
The Aguilas move into fourth place on the Apertura table at 6-6-2 and 24 points. La Franja (3-3-8) are 16th with 12 points.
