NEW YORK RED BULLS 2, HOUSTON DYNAMO 0
HARRISON, NJ—The New York Red Bulls surged back into first place in the MLS East with a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo Friday at Red Bull Arena.
Center back Markus Holgersson netted the game-winner from point-blank range in the 61st minute, after Tim Cahill – who collected his first MLS assist on the play – relayed Roy Miller’s cross back across goal from off the right post.
Jan Gunnar Solli added the insurance goal in stoppage time. Thierry Henry brought the ball into the box from the left side and drew the Houston defense toward him before dishing off to Solli for the easy finish.
Houston’s best chances to get on the board came within a four-minute span of the second half, starting in the 72nd minute, when Mac Kandji came in alone on goal only to send his shot wide of the right post. In the 76th, Houston’s Corey Ashe rattled the crossbar.
The Red Bulls, who were knocked out of the top spot in the conference when Houston beat them 2-0 last weekend, improve to 12-7-5 and 41 points. The Dynamo fall to 11-6-7 (40).
