4-0 win moves MHS to semi against Hebron
The McKinney Lions boys’ soccer team is rolling at a strong clip in the early season pre-district competition. Against the area seventh-ranked Bryan Adams Cougars (1-1-0) Thursday night, the blue and Gold Lions (3-0-0) stormed to a 4-0 victory in the their home opener.

Allen tries Coppell at Pearce
The chance to play unfamiliar tough teams is always one of the most intriguing aspects of high school playoffs and Friday’s girls’ team pairings has some prime examples of this, such as Friday’s 5 p.m. afternoon match between Arlington Martin (17-3-4) vs. El Paso Socorro in a venue, Odessa’s Ratliff Stadium, that is unfamiliar to both teams. Another interesting pairing will come in Denton, as the Denton Guyergirls entertain Wichita Falls Rider Friday at 6 p.m. At the same hour, nearly 100 miles south at Baylor University in Waco, the powerful Lake Highlands girls (21-3-1) test their area mettle against Texas A&M Consolidated,

Showdowns loom Friday night
This is the time of showdowns in high school soccer as playoffs begin to narrow to the strongest teams. It can take the form of a cross-town rivalry, such as the McKinney High boys vs. McKinney North, played Friday at Plano’s Clark Field, 8 p.m. Or it may be a bout between powers that rarely meet, such as the game between Arlington Martin vs. El Paso Socorro at 3 p.m. Friday in Odessa’s Ratliff Stadium.

Regular season wrapping up; playoffs next
Most 4A boys and girls finished district play Friday and all will be finished by Saturday, March 14. After district certification, bi-district play starts Thursday and continues through Saturday for those teams not having first-round byes. 5A boys and girls team finish district play by Tuesday, March 17, with their district certification to follow. The 5A playoff trail starts March 23-24 with bi-district play.
March 12, 2009 HS BOYS UPDATE
McKinney Boyd edges Plano West McKinney Boyd 1, Plano West 0--Sam Haines scored the lone goal for the Broncos at the 18 minute mark of the first half. The Bronco defense kicked in, recording their 10th shutout of the season as well as their 10th victory with the 1-0 win. Ross Rudolph and Kevin Wright split the time in goal for the clean sheet. The win puts the Broncos into a tie for third place with Allen.

Rockwall Heath keeps Pearce humble Rockwall Heath 1, Richardson Pearce 1—Hannah Tessaro put the number-one-ranked Lady Mustangs up 1-0, but the feisty Rockwall Heath Lady Hawks wouldn’t cave in at home. Amanda Petty tied the score for heath and that is how the game ended, with Pearce finally feeling the heat in district play in a tie.

Lobos stun McKinney Lions 3-1 McKinney 1, Little Elm 3—The Lobos have been tough all season, but it still had to be considered a huge shock when the visiting Lions were knocked off by Little Elm 3-1 Friday in their first district blemish of the season.

Flower Mound upsets Southlake Carroll Frisco 4, Centennial 1—The Lady Raccoons dominated from the outset, bounding out to a 4-1 halftime lead that held up through the rest of the game. Frisco goals came from the usual suspects, Katie O’Malley, Alicia Reyes, Chelsea Geller and Jessica Rodriguez, while O’Malley also added two assists and Reyes assisted on one goal. The win upped Frisco’s district’s record to 7-1 and a 16-3-2 overall mark.

Carroll girls now 1st; McKinney boys solid
Rankings change for many teams as district play refines strengths and weaknesses. The only drop by a first place team is among the 5A girls, where Coppell moves up to first, switching places with Allen, now in second place. The 4A girls saw a big shift, with two new teams (Lake Highlands and Kennedale) moving into the top 10.

McKinney Lions too hot to handle
McKinney High stays red hot, posting its 17th shutout as it hosted Prosper and roasted Prosper 9-0. The Lions have not give up a goal in district play, but face a big test Tuesday, going against rival McKinney North.

Coppell comes up with crucial victory
Several key wins fell in place Friday, such as Frisco High's 1-0 win over Frisco Wakeland. Coppell avoided a log-jam in the district race with a 3-2 win over Hebron, while Lake Highlands continued its district dominating ways by shutting out Richardson Berkner.
Frisco High School 1, Frisco Wakeland 0--Frisco’s Katie O’ Malley broke a 0-0 halftime deadlock with the only goal and game winner in the second half. That pushed the Lady Raccoons to a tie for the district lead with Wakeland, both at 6-1.

Randall Smith signs with Embry-Riddle
McKinney Lions senior defender Randall Smith recently signed his national letter of intent to continue his soccer career at Embry-Riddle University in Arizona.

Frisco boys upset RLT 3-1
Here are some new updates from Tuesday’s soccer games, girls included. Though the McKinney High boys have gotten rave reviews, and deservedly so, the Lion girls have been impressive in their own right, fueled by the dynamic scoring duo of Abby Smith and Meg Stofer. Stofer has totaled 16 goals and five assists so far, while Smith has 14 goals and 17 assists.
