PANDA CUP KICKS OFF TODAY
Notre Dame in feature games today, Sunday

The Panda Cup kicks off its second year today at Wylie with a free “mini” clinic, a Special Olympics tournament, colorful opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and a stellar feature match between Division I Women’s National champion Notre Dame and University of Missouri at 7 p.m. at Pirate Stadium at Wylie High School. Earlier feature matches at the stadium are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

All players are welcome on the field after the game for autographs and pictures. Immediately following this game will be a music and fireworks show.

To get the high level competition underway, there will be a 2 p.m. game between an African Men’s Select team vs. Roma FC Men’s team. This is the same Roma team that went on an incredible Open Cup run last summer, beating Chivas USA, an MLS team, as well as FC Miami, a USL team, before falling to the Los Angeles Galaxy.


Following at 4 p.m. is a game between SWU Premiers U17 vs. Nike IMG U18 at Pirate Stadium. The Canadian premier girls team has played in Dallas several times before and has always impressed with an athletic and well-coached squad.

Admission to the games at Pirate Stadium is $5, though any players and coaches in their uniforms will be admitted free.

The opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m., followed by the night’s feature match between Notre Dame and University of Missouri.



Besides the feature matches, the tournament features youth matches starting at 8 a.m. at the Wylie field complex. Additional games (see schedule below) will be staged at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.

Action continues Sunday, switching to the Craig Ranch complex on S.H. 121, with a noon game between Notre Dame and Baylor University. Following that at 2 p.m., the SWU Premiers Canadian team takes on FC Dallas 90/91.

The youth tournament also continues Sunday at Craig Ranch.

Feature games continue through the week at Pizza Hut Park with 7 and 8 p.m. starting times. No game will be played Thursday. Saturday, the tournament concludes in Abilene with a 3 p.m. clinic given by the SWU Premiers team at the Abilene National Soccer Complex and a 7 p.m. game Shotwell Stadium between the Canadians and the Angelo State University team.


The Panda Cup is a tournament promoting women and girl’s soccer at a very high level, in which university teams, local club teams and international teams come together over a one or two week period to play a series of friendly games in tournament fashion except without any sort of trophy. This tournament is completely in the spirit of sportsmanship with an open competition, forming relationships, an exchange in culture and education. MINI Cooper is a second year sponsor of the Panda Cup and the Title Sponsor for 2007 and 2008. MINI will have several cars at various venues throughout the tournament. This is definitely high-level competition including some of the best club teams of Dallas, university women's teams and international teams and also includes instruction from some of the best players and coaches around.

This tournament is not for a trophy or about egos but for the open competition between teams, forming relationships, sharing culture, education, sportsmanship and the love of playing soccer.
