FRISCO, TX—Anyone who saw Dave van den Bergh’s big-time strike against the New York Red Bulls Sunday, will not be surprised to learn it is up for the Goal of the Week Honor, for the MLS.
Van den Bergh came back to torment his former team in pulling Dallas even with the Red Bulls, 2-2, in the 73rd minute. Van den Bergh’s goal came on a first-touch in stride on a pass from Dax McCarty, who also scored a goal. Bergh had to hurry with the New York defense rushing in and he hit a nice bender that came in around the NYRB goalie and just inside the right post.
Of course, NYRB had then last laugh on then game, with clinching goal coming in the 88th minute by Juan Pablo Angel. The New York forward’s first strike of the game, a soft lob over Dallas goalie Dario Sala, is also up for the honor, as well as markers from LA’s Landon Donovan, the Rev’s Kheli Dube, Omar Cummings of the Rapids, Mike Banner for Chicago and Nate Jaqua of Seattle.
